Photo Diary: Venice, Italy

I finally made it back to Venice! I absolutely love this beautiful city on the water. It’s just so dreamy and extremely photogenic! I can’t really describe it’s beauty in words; you just have to see it for yourself. Though, I think it’s because it’s a city built on and around water that makes it so lovely. Venice is especially so because all of the quaint little buildings are all mismatched. Since the foundations of each building are in the water, you can’t tear it down. So all of the original foundations are still intact. They just build on top of what is already there, which usually ends up being a different material or a different color and that’s what adds to the city’s appeal.

I absolutely loved Venice even more this second time around. I don’t know what it is; I could just wander about all of the different alleyways and labyrinth like paths and be happy for days. There’s not much to do in Venice anyway other than eat and shop, so wandering around and just taking in all of the sites is my favorite way to spend my time there. And that’s exactly what I did! Though I didn’t do it everyday as the weather was a bit unyeilding with its rain the whole time I was there, but the skies did give way to a few moments that were just lovely.

I think I’ve officially seen all of Venice now. I got to explore parts of it that I hadn’t seen before the first time that I went. I now have a lot of new favorite spots that are away from the main tourist sites, so they are a bit quieter and more my speed. There’s one place in particular, one of the island sections of Venice that juts out into the Grand Canal, so that if you’re standing at the tip of it you can see water all around. You’re able to see Guidecca on one side and main Venice on the other. It is a gorgeous spot and I could see myself sitting there all day. When I can across it, there was a class of art students sitting all around sketching, painting and drawing what they see. I did end up returning to the spot a little later on in the day and was able to sit there for a while just looking out at the sprawling island city before me and it was quite nice!

Other than that, I didn’t do very much in Venice. Honestly, you don’t do anything in Venice anyway. It’s just a place to wander around and marvel at its beauty.

I've had this Jenn Bennett book on my bookshelf for a very long time. I've read a few of her other books, but this is one that my best friend would always ask if I had read yet. Well, I finally read it. And it was the cutest read! I love me a good contemporary YA novel!

This was the week U2 dropped their first surprise This was the week U2 dropped their first surprise EP of the year. I listened to Days of Ash on repeat and had to document it in my Hobonichi Weeks because it affected me (and I love it) so much. It even got me ranting on about the state of our world on the internet, which is something I don't normally do. But it's a mess; we're a mess. "We" as a civilization, I mean. "It" as in the World.

The songs on this particular album had me feeling all the things—sadness, anger, despair, and light, love, hope. It’s a shame that all of these feeling are true at the same time. I can never understand how we can all call ourselves human when we’ve collectively lost our humanity. (I’m generalizing here, but the last couple of years have felt like a global extinction of humanity.)

“There is no us, if there is no them.”

What makes humankind so beautiful is our differences and I can never understand how most can’t see we’re all the same in that. There's so much division and one too many sides. We all live in the inbetween, in the gray space, the "And Space" whether we want to admit it or not.

Whatever you believe in, I don’t care which side you’re on. What’s happening in Palestine, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, Iran...is wrong. What’s happening in the US is more of the same. Wrong, wrong, wrong. There’s no taking sides here. It’s all wrong no matter which coin you flip. All sides can be right, but all sides are wrong too—and that’s what people get stuck on. But when it’s innocent human lives being taken in the guise of faith, whatever faith…Fuck politics. This is all a morality war. And we need to stop being so mean to each other and learn compassion. At the end of the day, most of us want the same things anyway. There shouldn’t be an “other.” No one is above or beneath you. It’s just us, all of us. xx

I've been on a reading kick lately and have been picking up books about books. This was a very nice read after The Starless Sea. I really do like stories about unique secret libraries that hold various meanings of life. Mr. Penumbra was a nice modern take on that. Worth a read!
